2026 Precinct Caucuses will be held on February 3rd at 7pm, at four locations across Duluth. Use the Minnesota Secretary of State’s Poll Finder to locate your precinct, then come meet with your neighbors to discuss what matters to you!

  • Duluth East High School — Precincts 1–9 and 12–13

  • UMD Kirby Center — Precinct 10

  • Myers-Wilkins Elementary School — Precincts 14–19

  • Denfeld High School — Precincts 21–22, 24–33, and 35

  • TBA — Precincts 11 and 23

(Note: If you're in Precinct 34, your caucuses will be handled by the St. Louis County 03 DFL)

Agenda

1. Elect precinct leaders

You will be able to elect precinct chairs and up to two vice-chairs. The DFL has a rule that at least one of the vice-chairs must be a different gender than the chair. Duties include identifying and organizing DFL supporters in the precinct and attending meetings held by your local unit central committee. Officers are elected for a two-year term. Nominations can occur anytime after the caucus chair has been selected and you can always nominate yourself.

2. Hear from candidates

During your caucus, local candidates may stop in. They will usually make a short speech seeking your support and this is your chance to learn more about them.

3. Choose delegates

Your caucus will select delegates and alternates to represent your precinct at the SD8 DFL and Duluth DFL conventions. Delegates get to help influence politics in Duluth by endorsing local candidates at the convention, selecting local DFL leaders, and possibly becoming a state delegate. Alternates are important because if a delegate cannot attend, they represent the precinct in their place. You can also participate in one of our pre-convention committees. This is a good opportunity to get involved on a short-term basis!

4. Discuss resolutions

If there is an issue you are passionate about and would like to have it added to the DFL Party Platform or Action Agenda, you can submit a resolution for consideration at your precinct caucus. You will need to complete a form in order for the resolution to be considered, which can be found here. For a greater explanation of this process, you can check out this video.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • A caucus is simply a meeting where people get together to talk about politics. A precinct is the smallest political unit in Minnesota (often a neighborhood or two). So a precinct caucus is a meeting of your neighbors to discuss politics!

The Minnesota DFL holds precinct caucuses once every 2 years so regular people can get together and steer the direction of our city, state, and country.

  • At precinct caucuses, we elect local party leaders, choose delegates to the SD8 DFL convention, and discuss resolutions to be added to the party platform. Showing up for this one night is the easiest, most impactful way to steer the DFL Party’s direction for the next two years and beyond.

  • Know your rights: Minnesota Statutes Section 202A.19 permits Minnesota residents to take time off from work without pay to attend precinct caucuses, provided they give their employer written notice at least 10 days in advance. State universities, community colleges, and public schools may not hold classes or events after 6:00 p.m. on the evening of precinct caucuses. State agencies, school boards, county boards, township boards, city councils, and all other political subdivisions may not conduct meetings after 6:00 p.m. on caucus night.

  • If you want to participate but cannot attend, you can fill out a non-attendee form found here and email it to us at info@sd8dfl.org.

  • Yes! If you will turn 18 by election day, you can fully participate in your precinct caucus. And if you’re 16 or 17, you can participate in other ways — you just can’t vote or become a delegate. But you can still:

    • Propose resolutions

    • Count votes

    • Write the official record of decisions (the “minutes”)

    • Run the meeting

    • Join a pre-convention committee

  • Send an email to info@sd8dfl.org before January 20. Tell us your precinct and describe how we can make your caucus night more accessible, and we will address your needs with reasonable accommodations.

  • We at SD8 DFL want to make caucuses accessible for everyone, even people who speak or sign languages other than English. If you or someone you know requires an interpreter to participate at a precinct caucus, email us before January 20, 2026 with your precinct number and the language you would like to have interpreted, and we will do what we can to accommodate.
